I just finished Bookends by Jane Green a day or so ago. I didn’t post on it right away because I wasn’t really sure how I felt about it. Overall it was a decent book, I wouldn’t say that it is on my must read twice list.
I had a hard time really getting into the story about college friends that lived together, and endured life’s trials together. The story moved slow at first, and I feel that there was too much detail given in spaces where it didn’t need to be given. I”m not a big fan of filler.
Towards the middle of the book the drama picks up with relationships, marriage troubles, new businesses, lost loves, health issues, sexual preferences, old friends, and quitting jobs. I’d say go ahead and read it once. But I will also say don’t hold it against author Jane Green if you don’t like it either. Like her other books it is set in London, (get used to that.) and you’ll read the phrase “bloody..” and “flat” alot. But in the end things always tend to work out.
If you happen to stumble through the library and come acrossed her books pick a few of them up. I never really noticed this until I picked up her book Babyville, but most of them have the same praise phrases on the back from magazines and publishers. Did they even read the books? Or did the publishing company pay to use the same quotes on each one?
All and all, I’m still a Jane Green fan, just not a Bookends fan.
